Ready Player One

Sitting at #3 on our list of best computer movies of all time is another Steven Spielberg masterpiece. Focused on an orphaned teenager, Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) is in a virtual reality world called the “OASIS” (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation) which he uses to escape the real world in the year 2045 (Columbus, Ohio).

The OASIS is a place where the limits of reality are your own imagination. A virtual word where you could do anything and go anywhere… need a vacation? There’s a “vacation planet” for that… Climbing the cliffs of Mount Everest with Batman. How about a VR Casino that uses IRL cash? But, after the creator of the “OASIS” passes away, a pre-recorded message announces that a winner of a game would be granted ownership of the OASIS (worth $1/2 Trillion). With three challenges to accomplish the win, their team (called High-5) set to complete the challenges before their competition.

“People come to the OASIS for all the things they can do, but they stay because of all the things they can be — tall, beautiful, scary, a different sex, a different species, live-action, cartoon.”

Hackers

The film name & Angelina Jolie pushes this film higher on our list of the best computer movies of all time. The plot, which “held some water”, follows a group of high school hackers, as one (Dade – Jonny Lee Miller) of the team is back on the scene (0-day) after being banned from computers for seven years. He’s known for writing a virus that caused the biggest stock exchange crash in history, he and his friends must prove that a sinister superhacker is framing them for their involvement in a corporate extortion.

Film note: A technical consultant for Hackers said that his involvement in the film inspired him to pursue a career as a screenwriter and directing… it sure enough did, as 17 years later he would be the Screenwriter and Director of the award-winning film Arbitrage – starting  Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon.

  • Angelina Jolie as Kate Libby / “Acid Burn”

Johnny Mnemonic

Johnny Mnemonic is CyberPunk action thriller film that stars Keanu Reeves and Dolph Lundgren. Reeves plays the title character, a man with a cybernetic brain implant designed to store information. But a plague called Nerve Attenuation Syndrome or “the black shakes” is ravaging the underclass. Tired of high powered pharmaceutical corporations profiting from the suffering, Reeves sets off to get things right.

The film was set to be a low budget small scale Cyberpunk film, but the budget almost exceeded 30 million dollars. With a take of a little more than $6 million the film bombed at the box office, and will go down for how NOT to make a Cyberpunk film. But, none of the cyber releases in 1990’s set the box office records; Cyberpunk was declared dead until The Matrix reinvented the subgenre four years later.

Johnny Mnemonic : Yeah, the Black Shakes. What causes it?
Spider : What causes it?
[points to various pieces of equipment throughout the room]
Spider : This causes it! This causes it! This causes it! Information overload! All the electronics around you poisoning the airwaves. Technological f***ing civilization. But we still have all this sh**, because we can’t live without it. Let me do my work.

TRON The Original Classic (1982)

Praised the groundbreaking visuals and acting, but it took over 14 years to be awarded an Academy Award. Winner for Technical Achievement, but NOT Best Visual! None the less, Tron eventually spawned a franchise, which consists of multiple video games, comic books and an animated television series.

Putting the icing on the cake, a sequel over 25 years later titled Tron: Legacy was released on December 17, 2010, with Bridges and Boxleitner (Alan Bradley and Tron) reprising their roles. Tron along with The Last Starfighter (our #14 pick) has the distinction of being one of cinema’s earliest films to use extensive computer-generated imagery (CGI).
